Over a decade ago, my mother gave me a subscription to a CSA for Christmas. It was the best gift I could have had at that time. I was obsessed with vegetables and healthy food. I had family members who had CSA deliveries and I was so drawn to it. The very first box I received had too many pears — and it made me happy and grateful to think about how to make use of something I wasn’t used to having so much of.

I remember the first time I tried a hachiya persimmon from the CSA box, and how I ate it just a wee bit before it was fully ripe.  When I was a child, my Grandmother had them around the house for decoration during the Holidays. I vividly remember feeling a strange sense of curiosity, because I thought it was a weird tomato. “Who would eat that weird tomato?” I thought to myself. They told me it was a fruit, I just didn’t understand it. It wasn’t a weird tomato, and it has turned out to be one of my absolute favorite fruits. I might not have known that if it wasn’t for getting a CSA box.

My life has totally changed since that first Christmas box and local produce has become a huge part of my life. Life took a turn for me once I really started to get to know my local farmers. I know each of the farms I buy from, and have spent a lot of time really listening to the stories, challenges, and realities that come with doing such beautiful work in this time. With the food I get to have every day, I feel an incredible sense of grounding, health, and radiance beyond what I knew when I was buying vegetables from grocery stores. I learned what was different about that and became so committed to buying from farms I know and sharing that with others. More recently, I have spent a lot more time at County Line Harvest, with David (my Partner and Owner of County Line) and Wisker the big friendly dog. Witnessing, what he and his crew do every day has deepened my perspective, as you can see through my blog stories.

This knowledge and these experiences bring me such joy. Lettuce makes me so happy! It seems silly and simple — but it truly lifts me up! (I’ll refer you to our article “I never knew I would be this excited about vegetables.”)

Being able to connect with so many different people and share what I’ve learned over the years has been so meaningful to me. Through Earth Matterz, I’m able to share not only the bounty of these fantastic farms, but also knowledge, resources, and — hopefully — some inspiration along the way.
